Finding the Perfect bike:Bicycles are one of the best ways to get around Santa Barbara, but the first step to cyclist freedom is getting the right bike. Before shopping around, consider what type of cyclist you are:
If you're thinking about a few afternoon cruises along the beach with friends, the best deal might be a day, half day, or hourly bike rental. There are great shops to check out here in town that can give you a great deal on a variety of bicycles to rent. For those who plan to ride more frequently, but like to take their time and enjoy the views, a beach cruiser, or ¨cruiser¨ bike is perfect. Cruisers are a great way to get around town at a relaxed pace, but plan on putting in extra effort to get up tough hills. If you know you're going to want to check out some of the hills and trails that SB has to offer, then a mountain bike is perfect for the job. If you enjoy long rides on the road, or plan to commute to school, work, or just friends houses by bike, then a road, touring, or hybrid bike will be the right fit. An alternative to these, for short rides around town, is a fixed gear, or ¨fixie¨ bike. Fixed gears bikes do not have the ability to coast, so you always have to be pedaling, even when slowing down. Many beach cruiser bikes also use fixed gears. While they may seem like extra work, many people consider fixed gear bicycles to be the purest form of cycling. Once you know what type of bike is right for you, it's time to explore the various places you can pick up a new or used bike. For new bikes, most people will choose from one of our local bike shops, although there are a number of websites that have great selections and deals as well. For a used bike, the biggest selection is craigslist.org and ebay.com. Craigslist is great because you can meet somebody face to face and make sure the bike is a good fit. Some local bike shops also have deals on previously owned bikes and equipment. Tips:
